EV Charging Etiquette at Public Charging Sites

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular and with the government’s aim to install at least 300,000 public EV chargepoints by 2030, public charging sites are popping up in urban and rural areas alike. However, with the convenience of charging sites comes certain etiquette that can make the experience smoother for everyone involved. Whether you’re a seasoned EV owner or a newcomer to the electric vehicle community, understanding charging etiquette will help foster a positive environment for all. Here are some key areas to bear in mind when using public charging stations.

Plan ahead
Know your EV’s range and plan your trips accordingly. If you’re driving a long distance, make sure you have enough charge to get to your destination or to the next charging station. See our tips on how to extend your EV’s range

Be Mindful of Charging Time
Most EV charging stations provide varying levels of charging speeds. AC chargers can take several hours to fully charge a vehicle, while our ultra-rapid DC chargers can provide an 80% charge in around 20-30 minutes. Once your car is charged, ensure that you move your vehicle once it reaches your required level to make room for others. Lingering at a charging site can disrupt the flow for those waiting to charge.

Don’t Block Charging Bays
If you’re in a public charging area, do not park in a charging spot if you aren’t charging. It’s essential to keep these spots available for electric vehicles that need to charge. This includes being mindful of designated EV spaces in a car park – just because you see a space open doesn’t mean you should occupy it, especially if your car isn’t electric.

Keep the Area Clean
Just as you would with any public place, keep the area around the charger clean. Dispose of litter in appropriate receptacles and, if possible, leave the station better than you found it.

Participate in Local Charging Etiquette
Many communities have established local groups or online forums where EV owners share tips and experiences. Engaging in these platforms can not only help you learn more about charging etiquette but also foster a sense of community among EV owners.

Adhering to charging etiquette at public charging stations is essential for ensuring a positive experience for everyone in the EV community. By being mindful of charging time, respecting designated spaces, staying close to your vehicle, and practicing patience, we can contribute to an efficient and supportive network of EV users.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help create a positive charging experience for all EV drivers and ensure that everyone has access to the charging infrastructure they need to keep their vehicles running smoothly.
