Summer road trips can be an exhilarating experience, especially with the rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) offering an eco-friendly way to hit the open road. Planning your EV road trip will help you to ensure a smooth journey. In this blog, we’ll explore tips and advice for charging your electric vehicle during your summer adventures, including where to find charging stations, how to plan your route effectively, and the best charging practices, so you can fully enjoy the scenic views and the thrill of the open road.
Check your EV
This may seem obvious, but if you’re packing or making other last-minute arrangements, you may forget to check that your vehicle is in good working condition before you set off. Make sure you check your lights, pedals, tyre pressure and tread depth are all in order before you hit the road. Also ensure your vehicle’s software is updated to optimise your trip.
Plan your journey
Knowing in advance when and where you’re going to stop off will make your journey a lot easier. Map out your trip so that you can take regular breaks along the way (you’ll soon notice how well this fits with enroute charging!) Check out our live map to find out where our chargers are located to help plan your journey. We’re also on Zapmap.
We offer a range of charging speeds to suit drivers’ needs from slow to ultra-rapid. Our ultra-rapid chargers are ideal for quick pit stops, allowing you to recharge in about 15-30 minutes, while our AC chargers can be beneficial when you’re staying at a location for an extended period, such as overnight at a hotel. Factor in charging times when planning meal breaks or sightseeing stops; doing so turns charging into an opportunity to relax and explore more. Charging times vary between vehicles and we suggest checking with your vehicle handbook to ensure you are optimising your charging sessions.
Charge in cooler temperatures
External temperature significantly impacts EV charging speed due to the effect of temperature on the battery’s chemical reactions. In colder conditions, the battery’s internal resistance increases, slowing down the charging process, vice versa for in hotter conditions. Many EVs automatically adjust charging speed based on the temperature to protect the battery. Optimal charging typically occurs in moderate temperatures, where the battery can charge at its maximum rate. Some EV’s also allow you to pre-condition the battery to prepare it for charging – check with your vehicle handbook for further details.
Drive smart
Be aware of peak travel times and potential delays. Busy holiday weekends can lead to areas becoming congested and hold up your journey. If possible, recharge your vehicle when it’s not as busy. Our live map provides real-time data, so you can recharge your vehicle with ease and discover nearby alternatives if necessary. We’ve partnered with a number of landowners and businesses such as Kew Green Hotels and various shopping centres to offer EV charging at convenient locations for drivers.
Stay hydrated
Your body is just as important as your vehicle’s health on longer trips. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration and impact your physical and mental health, especially during hot weather. Fill up your bottles and ensure you and those travelling with you drink water regularly throughout the day. Look after your body, it does a lot for you!
Have fun!
Lastly, don’t forget to enjoy the journey! The summer road trip is about exploration and adventure, and having a well-planned EV charging strategy can transform challenges into beautiful detours. With time to spare while your vehicle charges, you can explore quaint towns, visit national parks, or even chat with fellow EV drivers about their experiences. Proper planning will not only get you to your destination but can provide memorable experiences along the way. One of the joys of an EV road trip is the environmental benefit. By choosing to travel green, you’re reducing your carbon footprint and embracing a smarter way of driving. So, charge up and hit the open road this summer in your EV, creating lasting memories while embracing a sustainable lifestyle. Power Up, Go Adventure!
